01. Avoid Keyword Cannibalisation

Keyword cannibalisation is when multiple pages on your site are essentially competing to rank highly for the same keyword.  While you may think it is helping you, keyword cannibalisation can hurt your website and your business.

The reason for this is when Google tries to decide which page deserves to rank, they will struggle and often end up choosing neither of them. This will also hurt your page authority, and higher authority pages often rank higher. If you don’t want to compete against your own site, you should be sure not to overuse the same keywords. 

 

 02. Analyze Your Competitors

While it would be great if you were the only one trying to rank for specific keywords, that isn’t the case. Most of your competitors will be trying to out-rank you. So instead of ignoring them and their online content, you should be analysing it. This involves visiting the sites of competitors and checking out what they have to offer, what backlinks they have and how high they are ranking.

In addition to visiting your competitor's sites and reviewing their content, there are many different tools available that can help you analyse their website and links. By doing this, you will be able to see what they do well, what they struggle with and more.   From this make an action plan to try and outrank them for key topics.

 

03. Social Media

Social media is used by tens of millions of people every day. Not only is it great for keeping up with friends, family members, celebrities and news, but it can also help drive lots of traffic to your websites and content.  If your content is relevant, high quality and you promote it on social media, more people will visit your site and take time to read it.  Search engines use this type of information as a factor in their ranking algorithms.

Building an online presence often starts with social media, as it is a great way to expand your reach. To ensure your social media profiles are a useful extension of your brand and will attract new visitors, you should keep the profile updated, post relevant, high-quality content, and be sure to engage with followers!

 

04. Utilise Topic Clusters

A topic cluster is a collection of relevant content that each focuses on a smaller part of an overarching topic. For example, if your main focal point is personal finance, you will have many different kinds of articles on the topic. These could include X ways to save money, X reasons why budgeting is so important and more.

By planning topic clusters, it will help you build more relevance around keywords, and will assist in Google associating the content you provide with the topics you are trying to rank. This will also improve linking content to content, as you can quickly put a link to one article in another.

 

05. Get Help From Professionals

No matter what some people may try to tell you, optimising your website and ranking high on search engines isn’t an easy task. Many companies and individuals might be better suited to working with a professional agency than handling their SEO on their own. Managing it on your own can be expensive and time-consuming, and there are no guarantees that it will work out for you unless you have the relevant skills.

There are many great companies out there that can take your SEO to the next level, and help you rank higher on Google and other search engines like Bing.  No matter what your budget, you should be able to find a company and package to suit. Just be sure to use a reputable company to ensure no black hat tactics are used that may hurt your SEO in the long term.
